About me…
My name is Elsbeth Tillard, and I hold a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. My primary therapeutic approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a method designed to help individuals accept the reality of their circumstances while recognizing that suffering is a natural part of life. ACT encourages clients to commit to actions that foster meaningful change in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By aligning these changes with their values, clients can set goals, develop new skills, and create a more fulfilling and authentic life for themselves.
A core component of ACT is mindfulness, which empowers clients to observe their internal experiences and respond thoughtfully. Mindfulness cultivates a sense of inner stability, allowing people to navigate challenges with greater resilience. By staying present and aware, individuals can create a personal sanctuary of peace, regardless of external circumstances. It also helps regulate emotions, reduce stress, and foster a deep sense of self-compassion and security.
I also integrate Polyvagal Theory into my practice to help clients understand the origins of their emotional reactions. Rooted in evolutionary psychology, this theory explains how our fight-or-flight response evolved as a survival mechanism for early humans but now activates in modern contexts, such as stress from non-life-threatening stimuli like an email. By understanding these responses, clients can better manage their emotions and work toward meaningful personal growth.
Every client is unique, as are their needs. While my approach is grounded in the principles mentioned, the techniques and strategies I use are tailored to fit each individual's specific needs and goals.
Outside of work, I cherish spending time with family and friends who feel like family. I love discovering new restaurants, museums, and galleries in my vibrant Montreal neighborhood, and cafe hopping on weekends. I make it home to the Maritimes whenever I can, especially when the sea is really calling me home! My love for exploring extends to travel, which I adore and wish I could do even more often.
I am passionate about maintaining an active lifestyle, as I consider physical activity to be one of my most effective and empowering self-care strategies. This commitment has also deepened my interest in the mind-body connection, a topic I have explored extensively through both personal experience and academic literature.
As reflected in my therapeutic approach, I have a deep belief in the powerful connection between the mind and body. I believe it holds insights into what we may not yet understand—or may be hesitant to confront—while paving the way for genuine healing and self-discovery.
